Let's play the role of a wise man!

June 1st, 2009

The government of the united states has a place known as the congress which is a place where a decision finally takes place ready for the president to be signed. The congress is formed by members of certain parties that are most of time against or for any decision that will affect the country but has to take place. The congress we have right now is formed by 57 seats taken by democrats, 40 seats taken by republicans, and 3 seats taken by an independent party therefore showing a total of 100 seats that will be part of the final decision.

On the other hand talking about political parties, the united States of America has two major parties which are best knows as the democratic & republican party. The democrats are most of the time liberals and its considered the largest party in the nation , while the republicans are most of the time conservative and its the second largest party in the nation.

There are issues in the everyday life that affect everyone of us without us knowing it, and the same time we take one side to give it a solution. Personally speaking when we side with an issue we often call it "our point of view" but politically speaking we are supporting one party of the other to give this issue a solution, but do we know according to all of the issues that arise everyday which side we're taking ?

Here's a list of the most common issues that our nation faces, and the views that the conservatives & liberals have on them.

Abortion:conservatives are strongly against it, while Liberals think that's a personal choice of a women regarding her own body.
Death penalty:conservatives are pro-death penalty, it's a punishment that fits the crime, while liberal thinks that's something inhumane and cruel suggesting that it should be abolished.
Economy:conservatives believe in a free market system and competitive capitalism. Liberals want to have a market system where the government regulates the economy.
Environment: they are both concerned about it depending the view that have on other issues such as they economy so they are concerned about the environment of its own benefits that the concern will bring.
Education:conservatives think parents should decide on their kids education while liberals argue that there should be more public school because this would = more $ for teachers & small classes [[ more jobs too]].
Gun control:conservatives say "defend yourself" more guns = less crime, on the other hand liberals are against it because guns kill people.
Health care:conservatives think health care should remain owned by private companies & not the government, and liberals think the government should supervise the health care.
Immigration:conservatives support legal immigration( meaning people that came to the country in legal ways otherwise they are completely against it), and liberals support an amnesty for illegal immigrants and they also believe that immigrants should take the jobs that the Americans do not want to do.
Religion:conservatives say that the government should not interfere with religion, and liberals say religion should not interfere with the government.
Same sex marriage:conservatives are completely against it, and liberals think all individuals should have the right to marry someone they love.
Welfare:conservatives oppose long-term welfare, they don't want poor people to become self-reliant. Liberals support welfare they are very compassionate towards the poor.

On may 26th Obama Chose Sotomayor for Supreme Court Nominee who would replace Justice David H. Souter to become the second woman on the court and only the third female justice in the history of the Supreme Court.
This choice that Obama made has been a bit controversial whether she is or she is not a good candidate for this job.
Sotomayor has been been the main attraction of the congress since her appointment, here we find a few facts that will help us see whether she will be part of a wise decision made by obama who promised to bring "CHANGE & HOPE" to America or whether she is one of the latest surprises Obama has been giving us that in the long run will find a different end.

*People see Sotomayor as a reverse racist and some as a complete racist but are they doing this because they racist themselves?.
*She is more accepted by democrats than by republicans (let's not forget that they have the majority of seats in the congress but this doesn't mean that the republicans cant change the outcome of a final decision)
*Obama defended her by saying "she's is the right person for office since she came from a humble family, and she could be more sensitive in certain cases, thing that judges that come from more privileged families would not do or be"....( now do we want someone to be sensitive and go by what she feels or someone to follow the law as we all expect it to be)
*She is pro-labor---> smart money by siding with the unions...(would this be a good thing and help the economy?)
*In the case Hellenic American neighborhood action committee V. city of New York, she showed one weakness because she should have never delivered a verdict. This showed that she either doesn't know the difference between Federal & State courts, or she was so "troubled" that she snuk it through knowing she didn't have the power/ jurisdiction to do this (anti-corruption).......(is this a good thing or bad thing that she will do things n take decision even thought she knows she shouldn't...would she try to change the law in her favor?.
*She protected the homeless when they said they were being exploited even though adults consenting to work for free is not considered exploitation, its voluntarism....( good thing she shows to care about the community and people that need help but would this make poor people want to become self-reliant?.
*she has 16 years of court experiences..wouldn't this be a good enough to convince and prove to the congress that she is the perfect candidate for the office?
*She is often seen a realist... ( good thing she is... I personally think we don't need people in the government to cover up serious issues...we need people to tell us straight forward what it is, how it is and how it will be).
*She also tends to show suspicion of a bloated government & corporate power....( this makes a few people dislike her who wants big corporation to have power?...exactly my point across)
*People fear she wont be neutral arbitrator...( big concern)
*People don't want someone who will most likely to favor other Latinos ( this goes related to the last point that was made about being a neutral arbitrator).
*People strongly believe, she shows too much passion for minority groups."There's a difference between having that perspective, and being able to put one thumb on the scale to benefit one group over another" said John C Eastman...[ I have to agree with the quote there's a lot of diversity in this nation so I think we need someone who is completely neutral in the office, we don't need some1 to shift one way or the other because that just not fair(even tho im Latina myself.. but I gotta care about other people too..we can't be that selfish)]

In my honest opinion as every human being she has her good and bad things but overall I think judge Sotomayor is a good candidate for the office. All the weakness she has will become part of the variety of strengths that she posses right now so I say.. Let's give the lady a chance!

Fingers crossed for a wise decision to be made & for a better future of decisions that will be made in the supreme court by whoever takes that job :)
